There are three main types of laser that are used throughout the laser cutting industry today. These include:

* CO2 lasers – suitable for boring, cutting and engraving

* ND (neodymium) lasers – used for high energy but low repetition boring.

* Nd-YAG - Used where very high power is needed for boring and engraving

Process: Creating a laser beam involves stimulating a laser material by electrical charge or by using lamps within enclosed container. As the laser material is stimulated, the beam is reflected internally by path of a partial mirror, until it reaches enough energy to escape as a beam of monochromatic coherent light at the work area. In order to start cutting from anywhere else rather than the edge, a pierce is carried out before every cut. Piercing involves a high power laser beam which makes a hole in the material.
